Neoliberalism, the City and Changing Forms of Protest

A public talk by Dr. Margit Mayer, Professor of Politics at the Center for Metropolitan Studies, Berlin.

Margit Mayer is a leading scholar of urban politics. She is Senior Fellow at the Center for Metropolitan Studies in Berlin, after having worked as professor for comparative and North American politics at Freie Universität Berlin from 1987 to 2014. Her research focuses on comparative, urban and social politics as well as social movements. She has published on contemporary urban politics, urban theory, state restructuring and social movements, among them co-edited books such as Cities for People not for Profit, Neoliberal Urbanism and Its Contestations, and Urban Uprisings.

In this talk, Mayer will highlight the features of the neoliberal city and discuss the (changing) forms of resisting, challenging, and overcoming neoliberal urbanism.

This public talk is part of the programme for the international summer school ‘New Urban Life Across the Globe: Activism and Change in a World of Cities’ at the University of Copenhagen, and is presented in collaboration with Copenhagen Central Library (Hovedbiblioteket).
